Linotype, the father of all type foundries, announced a contest to celebrate 50 years of the font ‘Helvetica’. While researching about Helvetica, I learnt some interesting things, like how Arial is simply a tweaked form of Helvetica, courtesy Microsoft. I had never realised that Helvetica is such a versatile and well-proportioned font. I used to consider it a boring, sedate, characterless typeface. And i used to avoid it like mad. I never used it actually.Very corporate and stand-offish. But it is in fact highly readable, in any size. And quite beautiful, as fonts go. Funnily, after entering the contest, I use it ALL the time now. Just shows how perceptions can change. Though 50, its still young and raring to go.
